Her breakfast, alas, was not.
It took Elisa several tries to find the bakery she wanted (it was listed as "The Best Bakery in Kaspan!!!" in her travel guide, after all), and when she did, it turned out that the croissants were just sold out. A new batch turned up fifteen minutes later; she spent that time rereading the directions to Professor Lief's lab, chatting to a couple of young trainers buying sandwiches, scaring away a customer inadvertently when she tested out the megaphone function on her phone (and getting the evil eye from the shopkeepers), and pestering the flock of Pidgeys just outside the door. When she did leave, she was plus two croissants and minus ten dollars, and the bakery rejoiced.
She bit into the first croissant absently, her thoughts straying to her journey thus far. It had been exactly two weeks since she'd left her home in Rustboro. It had been the talk of the town that a new region had opened itself up and was inviting foreign youths to start their training there, and she had always wanted to be a "Pokemon Master", after all; Hoenn just didn't appeal to her as a place to spend a few years journeying through. Her parents were reporters, and she had just about seen every major town in the region (and a few minor ones besides). This new Kaspan Region sounded mysterious and exciting without the dangers of running into Teams like Aqua and Magma, and it didn't take much persuading before she added her name to the list of people applying for the Kaspan Pass on S.S. Tidal. Seven days later (she chose the slower-but-cheaper option, seeing as she didn't really have a million bucks to spend on travel and all) she arrived in Kaspan proper, and from there it was easy to find her way to where the lab supposedly was.
Her second croissant was half gone by the time Lisa came upon the lab building. A Pidgey had followed her all the way from outside the bakery, eyeing her bread hungrily. She crumbled the remnants and scattered it to the bird, before approaching the lab and rapping twice on the door: "Hello! Good morning! Anyone in there?" Thump.
Thump.
Thump.
Lief knew he had paperwork to do, and he knew he had to go and wrangle up some more Pokemon from the Breeder's Market, but he was just so tired. He didn't want to do anything other than toss this ball against the wall, or go to sleep. A nap sounded really nice. Yawning, he clasped the ball in his meaty fist, and leaned back in his chair, preparing himself for a nice long nap.
Knock knock!
"Aah!" Falling backwards, Professor Lief fell on his ass, staring at the door that lead into the main part of the lab. Mumbling about trainers, he got to his feet and puffed to the door, opening it to reveal the new, young trainer. "Hello! How can I be of service today?" He stepped to the side to allow Elisa in.

In her opinion, Pokemon labs were clean, neat places; you weren't supposed to hear strange loud noises whenever you went near them. Curious, she leaned towards the door, straining to pick up on any new sounds --
The door opened. That was new, she guessed.
Drawing back hurriedly, because eavesdropping was generally considered rude and well-brought-up girls simply didn't do that, she greeted the Professor with a hasty but genuine grin. "I was wondering if you're giving out starters today? I'm new, and I do want to start my journey around Kaspan -- oh, it sounds so interesting! All the new places... The new Pokemon..." she answered, easing herself into the lab, before peering around the room. A chair lay upended -- that might have been the origin of the sound, but what Pokemon could have caused it? She couldn't see any running around. It really was a mystery. Well, hopefully some were present in the lab today... thoughts still on her future partner, she turned her attention back to the professor, expectant. Lief nodded, stepping back to let her in. "Yes ma'am! Just step right this way..." He scurried towards a long table; that was where he would put the Pokemon and her starter kit. "Can I interest you in anything? Scones, tea... cookies?" Only recently had Professor Lief begun offering food to trainers; he was making or buying more from the market than ever before, and he knew that he should be at least a tad bit more sociable towards new trainers and the like.
He cleared his throat as he brought out a platter of goodies, leaving them within arms reach of the both of them should the trainer want one or three. Taking one himself, he smiled at her before biting into the chocolate chip cookie.

She'd just eaten her breakfast, but surely a small snack wouldn't hurt? After all, you had to keep your energy up on such a long journey, hm?
"Just cookies would be fine, sir! No need for tea!" Not wanting to trouble the professor any more than she already jad, the girl politely shook her head at the rest of the proffered food and reached out for a cookie. Mm, it's pretty good, she thought in approval. Chocolate chip had always been her favourite cookie flavour. In the meantime, she eyed the lab with interest again -- it vaguely resembled the Hoenn lab somewhat, but the machines looked different. Not that she was an expert in scientific technology, of course. "If you don't mind if I ask -- how's being a professor like? Is it busy?" (she thought it might be. With all the advertisements lately, surely a large number of trainer-wannabes like her had been rushing to the region) "Don't you have any assistants? I think there're some in the Hoenn lab, but I've only been there once..." He nodded and put the tea-holding kettle down and chewed thoughtfully on his cookie, trying to keep himself from reaching out to take another. Lief had a big appetite that matched his loud mouth; he knew how to fill it and where his money should go, should be bet on anything. Betting? Where did that train of thought come from? There wasn't a betting pool anywhere here, the last time he had even gambled had been at Goldenrod City at his twenty first birthday.... "Oh? Oh!" Lief shook his head and stood a little straighter, brushing the crumbs from his stomach. "It's busy if you don't have help. I don't have an assistant as of yet, so I'm running this place all on my own." Lief almost sounded proud of that, even though his backroom was a disaster model.
Again, Lief shook his head. "Oh! What am I doing. You're here for your starter, aren't you? Look at me, just chit-chatting like you've got nowhere to be. Hold on just one second!" Lief then raced back towards one of the backrooms, in an attempt to actually do his job and get this trainer her starter.

Right..." Somehow, Lisa had a worrying feeling that perhaps being in charge of an entire lab alone is not such a great idea, but so far it seemed to work alright, by what she could see. There was no need to worry on behalf of the professor. "Maybe you could look into hiring some help, you know -- put out flyers and such. I'm sure there are people who'd like to work here." It wouldn't hurt, certainly, especially if more people were going to arrive soon. She didn't particularly want to be a lab tech, but her sister was deeply in love with her job as Prof. Birch's assistant, so there must be some merit to that work.
"Oh! What am I doing. You're here for your starter, aren't you? Look at me, just chit-chatting like you've got nowhere to be. Hold on just one second!"
She perked up when the professor mentioned her starter. "Oh, it's okay! I don't mind -- and thanks for the cookies! They're really good," she called out as he hurried towards the back of the lab, where presumably all the Awesome Things were stored. What would her starter be like? She hardly knew anything about Pokemon and battling -- a terrible state, given that she grew up interacting with Pokemon and Pokemon fanatics alike -- and the journey seemed tough. She needed a good, dependable starter, didn't she? (She could remember some of her parents' friends talking about Pokemon: never choose something you can't handle, that was the general agreement. She'd have to be careful not to end up with, oh, a Bagon chewing her hair or something.) Lief darted into the backroom, her options for help going ignored for the time being. Sure he had his days filled with getting new Pokemon from Breeders (how do you think he got all these 'starters'?!) and Trainers coming in from all over the Pokemon world... but did he really need an assistant? Thinking back to his office where paper and fixed pokeballs sat in boxes, stacks and flittered all over the floor, he wondered if the young girl was right ... maybe it was time to look for some hired help. Gathering an arm full of Pokeballs and the generic starter kit, he went back to the table and pushed the cookies to one side, and set the 'balls on the other, joined by pictures of what the Pokemon inside were. "There you go!"

Her starter was amongst them! She was suddenly just one step away from her trainer-hood, and anticipation brought Butterfrees into her stomach. Nibbling another cookie to hide it, the girl peered down at the photos.
She immediately struck several off the list mentally. Treecko was out: she didn't come all this way just to pick a Hoenn starter. She doubted she wanted to travel with a Snorlax (the general opinion on it was big, heavy and sleepy, but a solid team member (literally) when it came down to it, but it just wasn't her type of Pokemon), and Hoppip was too flighty. And she didn't like cactusy creatures. At all.
So that left Charmander, Totodile, Teddiursa and Trapinch. Come to think of it, the "typical" starters were uninteresting too -- she could always have gone to Johto or Kanto if she wanted one of those. It was time to experiment with a new type of Pokemon. She eyed the Trapinch photo warily; those jaws looked quite terrifying, and if she didn't want a Bagon nomming on her, well, she certainly didn't want this one. It was an interesting choice -- people spoke highly of its evolutions back in Hoenn -- and she'd be keeping an eye out for it on her travels, that's for sure.
But, Teddiursa? Seriously? It looked kind of, uh, soft. And small and cute and absolutely lovable -- ah, hell, she was taking this one. It was Not Up For Discussion, not after she saw that photo. Those great, sparkling eyes --!!
Pushing back the stack of photos, she nodded to the professor. "Thanks, sir, I'll be taking the Teddiursa. Good luck with the lab!" Teddiursas liked sweet foods, she remembered; surreptitiously she pocketed a couple of cookies for her new friend. Lief grinned as she picked her Pokemon, clapping slightly for her. "Congratulations! You've picked your starter, and now I only have good luck and this ... starter package to give you." Lief handed her the Pokeball with the Teddiursa, as well as the ever generic starter package, and nudged the plate of cookies towards her again. "You can take more if you like, Teddiursa enjoy sweet things."
