Jessie yawned and rolled out of bed, excited to finally be starting her Pokemon journey. She had only put it off for the longest time! Her ill father had passed away about a year ago, leaving the young girl to live on her own. She sold most of her possessions for food, and at the end of everything, she sold the house and lived on the streets. She had just enough money to keep her alive.... but for how long?
That was when she found a discarded letter in the gutter. Hard to read as most of the ink had been wiped clean, Jessie prized herself in her eye sight, and after a few hours of studying the paper and trying to figure out what it all meant, it came to a halting conclusion. It was a letter for new - and old - trainers to start again! She worried over the ticket price; a special ship liner had been created specially for this voyage... would she have enough to get there?
She risked everything by buying that ticket. Now it was all coming to a head. Sixteen year old Jessie stood outside of the lab, shuddering in slight anxiety and happiness. She had nothing left to lose. Knocking, she opened the door and stepped in, looking around. "Hello?" She called out.

"Coming!" Came Professor Lief's voice from the back room, the door was ajar. If Jessie could peek in, she could see him struggling with his clothes. Taking a nap mid-day proved to be his second weakness; food being his first. As a bigger man, Lief found himself lagging in energy and whenever he tried to catch a fast nap, he woke up to someone - often something - waking him up. Shrugging on his coat quickly, he raced out of the room with a single shoe on.
Not giving the girl much of a look over, he approached her with his cheeks ruddy from running and being caught asleep on the job. "Hi! I'm Professor Lief... what can I do for you?" He asked her, breathless. He wanted to get this over and done with fast, but instead he knew he should take it slow, considering the things he had just done, including taking a nap in his back office.

When the professor came bumblig out of his backroom, Jessie's initial hope faded slightly. He didn't seem like the professor-type, which only made Jessie feel silly. What if he deemed her unworthy because she interrupted ... something? She lowered her head and played with the frayed pieces of belt she had saved from the last donation clothing bin. "I-I'm here for my Pokemon?" Jessie asked, biting the corner of her lip.
Would her father be happy with her, if he was still alive? Would her mother? Questions filled her head and of course, doubts and negative thinking quickly followed. When you lived on the streets like she had, there wasn't much more that you could do than think like that.

Professor Lief took a few deep breaths - quietly - and listened to the girl. She could tell by her clothes that she wasn't exactly living in the lap of luxury, which could prove to be good for her, as well as the professor. Smiling, and realizing he had his heart rate back to normal, he nodded at her. "Of course. Come with me," Naturally a loud speaker, he was trying to keep his voice down for the young girl as he led her towards the medium table. He held his hand up to her in a 'wait a second' motion, and scurried into the room he had fallen asleep in.
Picking a handful of Pokeballs, he walked back out to the table and laid them out, smiling kindly at the girl. "Here ya go. There's eight here, and you can pick anyone you want."

Jessie watched as the man went into the room he had previously come out of, and wondered if he was going back to sleep or back to doing whatever it was he was doing before Jessie showed up. Worrying her bottom lip between her teeth, she followed the man and then stopped when he put his hand up. She stood there, as he came out with an armful of Pokeballs and her heart began to pound harder. Brushing back her pink hair, she looked at the man before looking at each of the Pokeballs, wondering. He had placed pictures of the Pokemon behind each ball, so it made picking easier... but now she was stuck.
Charmander... or Mareep?
"I'll take Mareep!" Jessie decided after a moment,

Mareep? Against a fricken Charmander?! Lief nodded, but deep inside he was in disbelief. Maybe this girl wasn't such a good candidate for being a Pokemon Trainer... "Mareep it is! One second, girl." He went back a few paces and grabbed the starter pack every new trainer got, and returned to the table so he could take the Mareep ball and hand it to her. "Here you go. The first gym isn't until Vida village, so you'll have time to train and catch more Pokemon."
name up to trainer, male pokemon level 5 , tackle , growl x 5 x 1 x 1 Dex Map

"Thanks!" Jessie said with a grin. She took the Pokemon from the Profesor, and fled from the lab. Jessie returned a few moments later, blushing. She had forgotten the starter bag! "Thanks again!" She said, waving to the Professor as she started on her way out once more. 'What to name you?' Jessie thought as she left the sleepy village of Altic and headed for the next one.
