s e r e n a !A slender hand was outstretched towards the sky, relishing in the sun's warm rays. The young female withdrew her right arm and placed it back at her side, merely standing there for countless minutes. Serena's muscles ached from the long trip, as she had begun in Snowpoint City of Sinnoh. The two regions were fairly distant, at least as far as Serena could tell. It seemed that none of Sinnoh's native Pokemon were present in this, the Kaspan, region, which was proof enough that she had traveled farther than her preference. However, she hadn't much of a choice. Serena's brother had begun his journey in Sinnoh just a year ago, and she didn't like the possibility, however small it was, of running into him. A bit of researching here and there, and she eventually learned of the Kaspan Region.
The abundant greenery was certainly new to Serena. In Snowpoint City, it was considered fortunate if a blizzard didn't shake your house in the morning. Having never traveled outside of her hometown before, the weather was a drastic change. In this case, Serena couldn't say it was necessarily a bad adjustment.
After too long, Serena's destination came into view: the laboratory. It imposed no emotion within her, as this journey had no emotional value. She was traveling from point A to point B, point A being the weakling she was, and point B being a strong, feared trainer. Any events that happened in between were trivial. In order to face her brother once more, this is what must be done.
Without thought, Serena's hand was on the doorknob. She could feel anxiety beginning to flutter within her stomach. With disgust, she discarded the emotion. With gentle force, the door creaked open, and Serena slid inside. She saw no reason to speak, so she stood there, a neutral expression displayed on her face, waiting for her destiny to come to her.

He wasn't in the best of moods, but there was nothing he could do about it. Lief hadn't slept very well the night before and of course this was because he had too to eat at dinner (again). So, when he got up this morning, it came to no surprise to him that he felt like he was on a food hangover; sick, and feeling like everything was a bad thing. He wasn't surprised that the Pokemon seem to be feeling the same way. He left the backroom after a short nap - in search of food.
Lief was startled when a trainer stood there without introducing herself or ... in turn asking if anyone was there. "Uhm." He started, raising an eyebrow. "Hi. I'm Professor Lief. How can I help you?"

s e r e n a !After several minutes of standing, a man finally appeared. He seemed surprised, though it hadn't occurred to Serena as to why he should be. She straightened herself and met his gaze before replying calmly, "So you're the professor?" Then, as if it was obvious, she added, "I'm here for my starter Pokemon." Why else would I be here, she wondered. It wasn't as if she appeared old enough to visit for a professional purpose.
After speaking, Serena dropped her gaze and twirled stray strands of long, violet hair between her right index finger and thumb. It was nothing but obvious that she had no desire for unnecessary conversation. Even as a child, one that knew her could categorize her as unsociable. Serena thought such ideas as amusing. Why bother with little chitter-chatter? Neither party gained any knowledge or strength from needless talking, and now wasn't any different. Besides giving her a Pokemon and perhaps a few supplies, Serena doubted that the man could offer her anything else of major importance.

"Yes little ma'am! Come right in and I'll get cha what cha need!" His little accent seemed to slip in when he was trying to keep himself happy for the kids coming around his lab. He ushered her in and looked at her, but when there wasn't an obvious want for any petty conversation, the smile that already felt strained on his face felt a little more out of place. "Here for your starter hmm? Well, help yourself to some water and cookies, and there are water bottles on the table that you can take with cha." The Professor bit his lip. "I'll be right back."
He left her in the hallway in attempt to get her what she wanted and to help her get on her way. He went into a backroom and spent a few minutes in there, before he came back out and smiled kindly at her, motioning for her to follow him to the table where he set the Pokemon balls out and the pictures depicting what was inside of them.

s e r e n a !Serena glanced at the man skeptically. His bright enthusiasm seemed forced. She almost sympathized with him, as he had to deal with bubbly, naïve children daily. The teenager couldn't imagine as to why he would choose to spend his life like that. Why sit here, contained in a building with Pokemon and happy-go-lucky children instead of honing your own strength?
Her gaze followed him as he walked down the hallway. The atmosphere was calm once more as silence settled around Serena. She breathed in deeply, enjoying the cool air that blew around her. She had never imagined that she would miss the frigid atmosphere of Snowpoint City. However, the hot humidity that she felt for the past few weeks was just as bad, if not worse.
The increasingly loud footsteps caused Serena to look up once more. It seemed the professor was back, and this time he was carrying her first stepping-stone in the path to strength. Disregarding his smile, she walked towards the table. She glanced down at the pictures, which caused her hair to fall in a curtain around her face. As she briefly looked over the pictures, she muttered, "Is this it?" She couldn't say she was disappointed, as she hadn't expected much of this laboratory, but these Pokemon seemed rather weak.
The first three Pokemon were unidentifiable to her, so she figured they were native to some other region. She vaguely recognized the rest of them. The following Pokemon was a Pineco, as she recalled. As it wasn't powerful in the slightest in her mind, she skipped it without hesitation. The next was a Bug-Type, though the name escaped her. Again, she skipped it without much thought. She recognized the Nosepass, though she didn't wish to have it in the least. There were much better Rock-type Pokemon that she would rather utilize than that. However, the Growlithe was at least somewhat promising. Fire-type Pokemon were always a powerful asset, and Serena knew that the small dog Pokemon evolved into one of the most powerful Fire-types. While the Growlithe itself was weak, Serena hoped that it would soon become a force to be reckoned with.
Tearing her eyes from the table, she looked back at the professor and said simply, "The Growlithe will do."

"Then she's all yours, good luck to you!" Lief managed to get out on a cheerful note. He had paid some attention to her while she mentally went through the selections he had given her. Of course, he had no control of it all. "There's a map in the package there; if you follow the route out, you'll eventually come across another village. There's all sorts of Pokemon along the way, too."

s e r e n a ! The new trainer mostly ignored the professor while she collected the Pokemon and the supplies. She slid the Pokeballs and the two medicines in the large backpack that was slung over her shoulder. She placed the dex in the back pocket of her jeans and kept the map in her hands. As proud as she was, she knew that she had little hope of advancing in this region with no direction. Serena had nearly gotten lost on the way to the laboratory as it was.
That just left the occupied Pokeball unaccounted for. It was nestled in the palm of her left hand, her fingers curled around its cool, metallic surface. It was almost funny: this little sphere was the beginning of her future, how her first step would be recognized once she became a feared trainer. Her thumb slid over the red-and-white surface, accustoming itself to the object that would soon be central to her life. With a quick blink, Serena placed the Pokeball into the front pocket of her bag.
With that, she began walking to the exit of the laboratory, still without saying a word to the professor. The door creaked open once more, letting in the bright sunlight that caused Serena to squint her eyes. She momentarily paused in the doorway, the sun's warmth on her face and chest, and the cool breeze of the laboratory against her back. "Thank you," she muttered, her tone seemingly forced. With nothing more to add, Serena let the door close with a gentle thud behind herself.
