RYANAfter what had seemed like forever, Ryan had finally arrived in the Kaspan region. It had been a long trip and he'd felt more than a little seasick more than once, but hopefully this was going to be worth it! He was still yet to work out why he had received the letter informing him of this mostly unknown region in the first place, but there was no way he was missing as big of an opportunity as this! His mother had agreed with him and he had soon found himself leaving his home in Kanto to make his way out to Kaspan. Now he just needed to find the lab and speak to Professor Lief, the local pokemon expert and the presumed writer of the letter he had received.
Coming across the place he was looking for, he swung the doors open as he entered and let out a small yawn. He hadn't rested much since his arrival, so naturally he felt rather tired. Looking around the lab, he couldn't see anyone around. Surely the place couldn't be empty though, right?
"Hello? Anyone home?", he called out to anyone who could possibly hear. He was eager to get this show on the road and shuffled his feet impatiently against the tiled floor.

"Stay!" Barked Professor Lief at the unrurly Meowth. It was being a pain in the ass, and Lief had dealt with it nearly the full day. "No! That's not a scratching post!" Wailed the Professor as the Meowth raked it's claws through the professor's lab coat. Thoroughly ruined, Lief sighed heavily and rubbed his temples. That cat was going to get it! Reaching for a Pokeball, his current train of thought was interuppted as someone called from the main part of the lab. "Hold on! One second!" Lief hollered, before the cat Pokemon sprang out of the room. Damn.
Chasing after the Pokemon, Lief came to a halt a few feet from the young trainer, huffing and puffing. He really had to cut back on the chocolate chip cookies! "Hi, there." Lief panted. "I'm Professor Lief... you must be here to get your Pokemon?" He took a few deep quiet breaths, as he attempted to calm his racing heart. The Meowth on the other hand sauntered from the main set of the lab and back into the side room, where the sound of fabric ripping was heard.

RYANNo sooner had he called out than the sounds of misbehaviour could be heard from an adjacent room. It sounded like some kind of pokemon acting up, a feline one of some shape or form he would guess as the sound of tearing fabric echoed across the formally quiet space. Sighing, he folded his arms as a voice he assumed belonged to Professor Lief responded to him and tapped his foot as he waited. This was going to be a more interesting visit than he had originally anticipated.
Another couple of minutes later, he saw a Meowth dash out of a side room, confirming his earlier suspicions, and straight into another, where the sound of more fabric being shredded could be heard. This was followed shortly by a rather out of breath man, whom he assumed to be the professor. Unfolding his arms, he answered the question that had just been gasped out to him.
"Yep, names Ryan, from the Kanto region. Before I pick one out, assuming that's okay, would you like to deal with your Meowth?" The loud tearing noises were beginning to make him wince and he really hoped that he wouldn't be given that particular pokemon. He wasn't quite sure how long it would survive if it began to tear at him like that...

Lief chuckled. "Hi there Ryan from Kanto, I'm Professor Lief, and yes. That is my Meowth." That cat Pokemon would seriously get it if it didn't stop and soon. He winced when the fabric ripping sound turned into a serious tearing. Lief prayed it wasn't his favorite dress jacket. "I can deal with 'im later." He coughed slightly, before grinning and looking at the boy. "So, what'cha want? A starter?" He asked kindly. The Meowth came darting back out again, but instead of running into yet another room, it ran at Professor Lief and stuck onto his leg. Gasping, Lief gave Ryan the 'wait a second' motion with his hand, reached into his pocket, and called the Pokemon back in to it's Pokeball.
"Wow. I- I'm sorry, about that." Lief wasn't sure if he was bleeding or not; if he was, he could fix it later.

RYANNodding, Ryan winced as the shredding sounds from the other room began to turn into loud tears. That sounded expensive, he thought, but thankfully it wasn't his problem. This Meowth was way out of control, a notion that was quickly confirmed when it ran from the room it had been occupying and straight at the professor! Wincing again as claws stuck into the mans flesh, he felt a sense of relief when the thing was finally called back. Thankfully, the professor didn't seem to be too badly hurt, but he would need to spend a lot of time with that Meowth. Perhaps the professor had originally received it because of it's poor behaviour, in which case Ryan didn't envy his task one bit!
With the distraction out of the way, the professor and young trainer could finally get down to business. He smiled at his apology.
"Don't worry about it, you okay? He had already stated his reason for coming here, so he decided to just get right to the point. "What'cha got?"

Lief nodded and waved his hand at the trainer. "I'm fine! This happens more than I like to admit." Taking a few breaths, he turned on his heel and headed into the backroom, calling over his shoulder; "I've got everything you need, boy! Just 'old on a quick little second." The sounds of rummaging and then a door closing; Lief returned with a small pack and an arm full of Pokeballs. Setting them out on the table with adjacent pictures, he stepped back and motioned to the trainer to take a look.

RYANRyan cocked his head as the professor left the room. At least he was alright, he supposed, or maybe it was simply an act while someone was watching. He doubted that of course, especially if the guy was anything like Professor Oak.
Upon his return, Ryan noticed the armful of pokeballs and raise an eyebrow. Most regions only offered three pokemon to choose from, but there must have been seven or eight there! Taking a look at the pictures beside each ball, he found himself rather spoiled for choice. There were a few there that couldn't be found in the Kanto or the adjoining Johto regions but at the same time there were some native species that he was rather fond of. This was going to be a difficult choice, and he tried not to take too long with it. It didn't take that long to narrow down the choice to Cyndaquil and Drowzee. He was rather fond of fire types, but at the same time he was equally fond of the psychic type. This was going to be a tough decision, but one he knew he would have to make. Nodding to himself at finally making a choice, he looked back up to the waiting professor.
"I'll take the Cyndaquil please", he said pointing to the pokeball in question. Fire types were always handy to have and he had to admit that Typhlosian, Cyndaquil's top evolved form, was really cool.

Lief nodded and handed the boy his new Pokemon, his starter pack, and nudged the plate of cookies at him. "Here you go, boy. In that pack you'll have a map, some Pokeballs and a Pokedex. I suggest you use it to catch as many Pokemon - or find as many - as you can." Lief took a breath, wondering if he forgot anything. "Oh!" He pointed to his left. "The next village is on the map, but it's about a day's journey from here."

RYANTaking the pokeball and the item pack from the professor, Ryan listened intently to his words. It seemed as though despite being so far away, the premise of pokemon journeys was pretty much the same as everywhere else. Letting out the Cyndaquil, the first thing he noticed was that it was a female. That was unusual for a starter pokemon. at least in Kanto. The second thing he noticed was the endearing little eyes staring up at him. The flame on her back burned quite small as the timid little fire type stood there scrutinising who she assumed to be her new trainer. It seemed that the best thing to do right now would be to attempt to break the ice.
"Hey there Cyndaquil", he greeted her as he sank on one knee in order to make some kind of eye contact. "I'm Ryan, and it's you and me from here on out! Let's have fun, okay?"
The young pokemon looked away for a second before turning back to him with an almost smile. This person didn't seem too bad and she really hoped he would treat her nice. Ryan nodded, seeing this as a sign of acceptance at the least, before rising back to his feet.
"Hey, how about I give you a name?", he offered before appearing as if he was contemplating. "How does Flare sound?"
'Flare' didn't seem to mind this new name, in fact it appeared she rather liked it. It kind of made her sound big and tough, even though she was small and shy. Maybe this trainer would be kind to her after all.
Nodding, Ryan thanked the professor before turning on his heel and leaving the man to his own devices. Day one of his adventure was only just beginning, after all, and he intended to make the most of every second. Making sure that Flare was following, he took another look at his map and made his way in what he hoped was the right direction.
