A small girl with white-blonde hair opened the door to Professor's Leif's lab, peering in. Her yellow eyes scanned the room for someone as she hesitated at the door, before she walked in anyways. No point in being nervous anyways. You've been waiting for this day forever, so don't mess it up! Raine took a few steps forward, her black combat-style military boots clunking against the ground. "Hello, anyone here?" Raine moved forward into the lab, looking upon the desks with curiosity. She'd never been in the lab and for some reason, it was hard for her to look at things without touching them. Her fingers ran across the side of the tables, before she heard a noise. Raine's head jerked up and her hand slid back to her side as she looked for where the noise came from and tried not to appear too guilty.

"Ouch!" Lief roared as the willful fire type blazed harmfully at the Professor. Growling, the big man whipped his hand back and withdrew the Ponyta, upset that he had been given a rather unruly beginner. That was the last time he stepped out of the Breeders Market to get newborn Pokemon... He headed into his office, his labcoat sooty and dark in spots where the pony type Pokemon had singed his coat. His beard looked shorter in some spots, and ... was half of his right eyebrow gone? He headed into the labratory, intent on cleaning himself up, but when his eyes landed on the new trainer, he paused in his stride and sighed, before smiling at her. "Hello! Sorry you had to catch me at a bad time.... are you here for your starter?"

Raine's eyes widened, partially in amusement and partially worry when the poor professor shouted 'Oh!' She'd never though about it before, but being a pokemon professor might not be such a luxurious job. "Are you okay?" She asked kindly, taking a few steps forward and giving the Ponyta a chiding look. "No need for that, Ponyta." Raine looked at Lief's lab coat, completely covered in dark spots from burns. Burns. She shivered, hoping that if she chose a fire type that it didn't burn her. Like this Poynta had just done to Lief. Raine had always imagined her first pokemon would be a fire type, because she loved fire so much. "It's okay, I'm here to get my starter, but... I mean, feel free to take your time." Raine gave the Ponyta a sly look. "We're just starting to get to know each other." [/b][/size][/blockquote]

The Ponyta wagged her head at the female before trotting out of the room, uninterested in the whole deal. Professor Lief shook and wiped the soot and burnt remains of his lab coat from him, shaking his head with a chuckle. "Ehh.. that's what I get for taking a Ponyta with a cruel breeder." The Ponyta had been unruly, but Lief was just as stubborn; he knew he could fix her into decent trainer shape. "Oh, no it's okay." He apologized, shaking his head. "What can I do for you, today? Do you want some cookies or tea before we get down to the good stuff?" Lief had forgotten to make himself lunch, so he only had snacks to go.

Raine watched the Ponyta go about her business, laughing at little. Then, she sobered up at his words. "That's awful... poor thing. I hate it when people treat pokemon cruelly. They deserve to be treated well, just like people do." She tilted her head, her short white hair floating down with the motion. Lief's lab coat was practically ruined, unfortunately, but at least he seemed to be nice. Ponyta would learn that soon, she bet. "I'd love a cookie, thanks!" Raine gave him a friendly smile, which lit up her pale features. "What's being a pokemon professor like... if you mind me asking?" Her curiosity got the best of her again; she willfully shut herself up before she started asking more questions. She was seventeen, but still had so many answers she needed. Raine knew she was still young, yet she had no idea where she was headed. All she knew is that she'd hoped to have her own pokemon for a very long time and thought being a trainer might let her experience more of the world- to open her eyes to new things.

Lief nodded. "I agree. Thankfully, I got to her just in time... although it seems as if the trainers previous behaviors have rubbed off on her... she's very unruly and unwilling to cooperate." The Professor was more stubborn than people gave him credit for, and this often resulted in more tame or trainer-decent Pokemon. He wasn't a cruel person and he treated Pokemon better than he treated most humans. That was just the way it worked sometimes. "It's .... not glorious, that's for sure." Lief chuckled, picking a cookie up. "Around here, it's more like rehabilitaiton for Pokemon than anythin' else. These people are natives; only growing with the influx of new trainers so most of their 'training' habits are what they've known their whole lives."
He paused for a beat, before he shook his head and smiled. "Being a Professor at any Region differs, but I love my job and I wouldn't trade it in for the world." He rubbed the back of his neck. "Are you ready to get your starter?"

"That's okay, I'm sure she'll come around. It's all she knows, after all." The small girl shrugged her shoulders, looking at the floor. A sudden wave of sadness swept through her. She imagined how bad the Ponyta's life had been so far to cause her to act so unruly... the thought of it almost physically sicked her. "I'm glad she's in your hands now." Pokemon rehabilitation... Her mood turned darker from there. Could she do this? She didn't want to do anything cruel to her pokemon and she knew that she wouldn't, but was she responsible enough for a pokemon? Could she take care of it in a way where rehabilitation wouldn't be necessary? "I'm ready for my pokemon," Raine said firmly, nodding her head. "I'm a little nervous, but I guess that everyone feels that with their first pokemon."

"She will. She's still just a young thing, so I'm sure we can re-route her behaviors in time to set her out for a trainer." Lief nodded. He had spent most of the day with her, and even though he came away from the experience burnt or frustrated, he knew that continuous patience and kindness would have to switch something in the Ponyta's brain. When she announced that she was ready for her starter, he smiled kindly. "Good! Help yourself to some cookies - hell, even pack some away, I know I don't need 'em - and I'll be back with what you need."
Lief left the girl as he walked into the back, being careful not to distrupt the Ponyta as she had now situated herself outside in the back paddock, nervously shying away from the other grass eating Pokemon like the Miltanks, Tauros' and Stantlers. He grabbed a starter kit and pressed a button, and eight Pokeballs flew out. Lief returned shortly to the girl, and put the Pokeballs on the table along with the pictures that came with it. "There ya go!"

Raine nodded, glancing over at the direction Ponyta had gone. It was a shame she wasn't ready to be with a trainer, or she would've totally taken her. Raine had a soft spot for things that needed a little love. "That trainer will be a lucky one." She smiled at Lief, her stomach growling slightly at the perfectly round cookies. She bit into one, closing her eyes to enjoy the delicious taste of brown sugar and chocolate. "Yum! Thanks Professor." She took another one and stuck it in the side pocket of her bag. Raine polished off the cookie as Lief walked away, wiping the crumbs from her mouth. When he came back, he placed eight pokeballs on the table with pictures. Raine walked forward, touching each picture with calm intensity. This was a decision she couldn't just blow off; she needed to think carefully.
Her dream starter had always been a fire-type, and Cyndaquil fit those requirements. Still, that seemed so mundane to her. She didn't need any pokemon in particular to fit a 'dream', she merely needed a pokemon itself. That was her dream. Looking through the list, there were a couple that attracted her attention. Raine's eyes latched onto the lone dragon-type pokemon in the list and her eyes lit up. She'd never dreamed that she could have a Dratini for a starter! "I would be honored to have that one," Raine said revently, and pointed at the Dratini. Her heart thumped in her chest in excitement. She couldn't believe the moment was here; she was finally getting her first pokemon!

Lief watched her take her time, and smiled. It seemed as if more and more trainers were actually putting thought into deciding what starter he or she wanted, instead of just taking what looked like the strongest, the coolest, or the bad-ass-est. Was that even a word? When she finally decided on her starter, Lief's eyes sparkled and he picked the Pokeball up for her and handed with it, the starter kit. "There you go! Take good care of this one. He's very gentle."

"Thank you so much Professor!" She said, grinning from ear to ear. Raine took the pokeball in one hand and the starter kit in the other. She looked intently at the sheen the light cast over the pokeball. "Welcome to my party, Dratini." Raine nodded to Professor Lief and headed for the door, smiling the whole way. "Bye Professor! Have a good day." Her mind raced with ideas as she opened the door. What name would her new Dratini like? What should they do first? [/blockquote]
