With a deep breath and a look of determination, Sophie gazed at the Pokemon laboratory building that loomed in front of her. This was it, where her journey would officially start. It seemed like only yesterday that she announced to her family that she wanted to become a trainer and left their farm on the edge of Fuchsia City. She was kind of worried about her brothers and sisters taking on her share of the chores, but she was sure they could manage. There was no turning back now.
The perky eleven year old gave the double doors a mighty push, and watched as they swung wide open. "I'm heeeeere! she called out in a loud, overly cheerful voice. Her curious green eyes eagerly looked around the laboratory in search of Professor Lief. She was told to go to him for her first pokemon, and she was anxious to get started.

Snore.
If seemed as if a Snorlax had taken over Professor Lief's spot. He was leaning back in his chair, hands crossed over his stomach, heels placed firmly on the top of his desk. It had been a long morning, dealing with colicky Teddiursa's and mischievous Plusle's. Not to mention the random influx of new trainers coming in to get new Pokemon. At this rate he'd have to start purchasing Pokemon in bulk.
I'm heeeeere!
Crash. Lief crashed into the ground and jumped up in shock and pain, grabbing his cushy behind as he stormed out of the room and into the main section of his research lab, looking to find the source of the noise. When his eyes landed on the bubbly young trainer - one of the youngest Lief had seen in a while - his rage instantly dulled into excitement, and he released his hands to cross his arms over his chest. "I can see that." He chuckled. "Hello little one, I'm Professor Lief, are you here to get your Pokemon?"

Sophie's eyes lit up as soon as she spotted the professor walking into the main portion of the laboratory. At least he wasn't out to lunch or anything like that. It had been a long trip here, and she didn't want any more delays. His choice of words, however, soured her sunny mood a tiny bit. "L... Little one?" she repeated, obviously annoyed. "I'll have you know that I'm eleven years old! Eleven!" she argued with him, puffing out her cheeks. One of her biggest pet peeves was for people to patronize or talk down to her because of her age. However, as mature as Sophie would like to think she was, the girl was still very much a child.
After her little outburst, she quickly calmed back down. Normally Sophie would hold a grudge about this particular topic until she got an apology. This was different though. More than the apology she thought she deserved, Sophie desperately wanted a pokemon! She didn't want to argue with the guy that could make that happen for her. That might take too long, and she didn't want to give him a reason to say no to her. "Yep! A pokemon's what I'm here for! Today I'm gonna become a trainer!" Sophie answered, returning to the chipper attitude she had carried with her when she first walked through the door. "I'm Sophie, and I cam all the way from Fuschia City to get my very first pokemon," she returned the greeting.

The Professor held his hands up in defence, chuckling at her. "Alright, alright. I'm sorry." Lief's eyes sparkled, his smile not fading. Force of habit, really. He called any 'young' looking trainer 'little one' and at the height of 5'9", it wasn't hard to be young looking to the Professor. He shoved his hands into his pockets, wondering how long he would need to entertain the girl before sending her on her merry way. He raised an eyebrow at her, playfully of course. Didn't want to upset her again. "Today's the big day, aye?" He could remember his own journey... but now was not the time to think back on days gone and past.
"Well, welcome Sophie from Fuschia City! Could I interest you in a cookie, or should I move right on to the good stuff - your starter?" He knew he had to tread carefully with the younger trainers; some of them were too interested in getting their Pokemon to even consider the free food he was offering them.

A big smile spread across Sophie's face as Professor Leif apologized for calling her a 'little one'. Maybe this guy wasn't so bad after all. He seemed to be taking her seriously. Hopefully everyone else in the Kaspan Region would be like this. She had a hard enough time getting here without constantly being asked if she was all by herself, where her parents were, and if they knew she was all the way out here. Of course they knew! Did they think she was some kind of delinquent?
Sophie's attention was drawn back to the present situation when the professor offered her something sweet to snack on. "Cookie? Ooh, what kind?" she immediately asked without thinking. Wait! No! The girl shook her head, chasing away any thoughts of whatever kind of cookie she was being offered. She was here on a mission! She couldn't let herself get distracted so easily, no matter how yummy the distraction. She was an adult now, after all...
"Erm... I-I mean... Nervermind that!" she corrected herself. "I wanna get straight to the good stuff. Can I have my starter please?" Sophie asked while holding out both her hands. She hoped Professor Leif wouldn't try for any more distractions. It was hard enough rejecting a cookie. Sophie didn't know if she had the will power to reject anything else he would try to throw at her.

Professor Lief had always felt a littleWhen she caught herself going for the cookie, her correction was adorable. He laughed a bit then caught himself, his smile now a grin. Beign woken up by this little girl wasn't such a bad thing after all. "Alright! Onto the good stuff - but feel free to help yourself to the cookies, Sophie. Chocolate chip, freshly baked!" He nudged the platter closer to her. "I'll be right back with your things, could you wait here for just two minutes?" He smiled kindly at her, hoping that she had just enough patience for the Professor to get what she wanted.
Without waiting for an answer he turned and headed towards the backroom, wanting to get her things as quickly as possible for the girl. He returned shortly with an armful of Pokeballs and a small generic starter pack for her. Smiling, he set the balls on the table beside the platter of cookies, along with pictures underneath each ball, depicting what was inside of them.

"No, really! I-" Sophie tried to protest as she watched the professor disappear into the next room. She pouted for a few seconds, before catching the smell of the freshly baked cookies piled neatly on the plate next to her. She stared intently at the plate, attempting to resist the allure of the sweets. Come on, she had a stronger will than this, didn't she? Only kids would be munching on cookies instead of thinking about what their first pokemon. But... chocolate chip...
Well, it was an awfully long trip. Also, Professor Leif did insist, didn't he? Surely he was going through a lot of trouble to get a pokemon for Sophie. It would be rude not to accept his offer! Just one wouldn't hurt, right? This was definitely just to be polite though! Sophie slowly reached her hand out and snatched a cookie from the top of the pile, taking a rather large bite out of it. It was then that the professor returned with eight pokeballs. "Uhh, I decided that you made far too many cookies to eat yourself, so I decided to accept your offer! You would get a tummy ache if you ate too many!" Sophie tried to explain, her mouth still half full of cookie. It seemed like she was trying to convince herself that it was okay, more than the professor.
Her attention snapped to the pokeballs as soon as they were set on the table. There were so many choices! Which one was she supposed to pick? Tauros was a familiar pokemon to her. Her family had several of them on the farm back home. Cleffa was absolutely adorable though! "Hmm," Sophie hummed as she studied each pokeball carefully. She definitely wanted something cute, but it had to be durable at the same time. "I'll take... this one!" she announced as she grabbed Phanpy's pokeball. Yes, Phanpy wasn't a bad starter at all!

When he returned to her, he saw that he was eating one of the cookies he had baked earlier. Glad that she had taken one, he watched her carefully as she herself began the ever important picking of her starter Pokemon. This was a seriously important choice - one of the most important choices - she would have to make on this long journey. Was she on her own? Worrrying slightly, he smiled then when she picked her Pokemon. "Great choice, Sophie! Here ya go, your starter kit. It has everything you'll need to get you going. You can find a Pokecenter and Pokemart in the next village, which is only a few hours away if you leave right now." He handed her the kit and smiled.

"Woo!" she cheered before stuffing the pokeball into her pocket. She couldn't wait to meet her new partner! She had to think of a name though. Well, he was an elephant right? Elephants were big and made the ground shake when they stomped! "I'm gonna name him Quake! I think it's a good name," she stated as she started loading up her backpack with the supplies that Professor Lief had laid out for her. She wanted to get to the next town before it got dark. She didn't really know the area, and didn't want to get lost. She should be fine since she had a map now though. "Thanks a lot Professor! I'm gonna be going now! Buh bye!" Sophie slung the backpack onto her shoulders and gave the man a friendly wave before leaving through the double doors. She had a long road ahead of her.
